RCCG holds skill acquisition programme to reduce unemployment
To boost productivity among Nigerian youths and help reduce the high rate of unemployment in the country, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Overcomers Zone, Abule Egba, Lagos has commenced an empowerment tand skill acquisition programme for young people in the community.
The focus of the training includes tailoring and fashion designing, cosmetology, decorations and events management among others.
Speaking on the initiative, the Zonal Pastor, Afolabi Simeon decried the high rate of unemployed graduates in the country.
He blamed the situation on the country’s long system of education that is more of grammar and not much practical learning.
“The truth remains that the major cause of unemployment among these vibrant youths is lack of skill to back up what they learnt from their institutions of learning. When these graduates were still in school, they did not border to learn at least one single skill, maybe that which is related to graphic designing, typing, hair dressing, electrical maintenance and others. If they had learnt any skill at all, the rate of unemployment will reduce among them.
“Therefore, the need to acquire and develop specific entrepreneurial skills cannot be neglected because entrepreneurship is vital to creating employment and indeed a special form of employability for graduates.
Empowerment helps individuals or groups to fully access personal and collective power through knowledge, skills and motivation for proper functioning in their society and contribution to the economy,” he said.
He said the aim of the programme is to help people to discover themselves, realise their talents and be productive individuals.
“We also look forward to empowering them after the training and not just impact knowledge,” he added. He urged the youth to strive to live a purposefully life and not seek shortcuts but follow normal route to achieve success.
Facilitators at the programme spoke about talent management, starting and improving business and career path. Simeon explained that registration for the training close in July before the training will fully commence in August.
